“A: I open the door and step out.
P: Wondering, in all the languages I have at my disposal.
A: How you’ll see me.
P: What you’ll say.
A: And what, if given the chance, I might say back.” -
Seen/Unseen questions and challenges dominant ideologies of beauty and bodies, valued narratives, and what it means to be truly “seen”. As two Asian-Canadian artists, the creators have experienced a severe lack of representation in theatre, media, and discussions surrounding gender and sexuality. This project aims to challenge reductive stereotypes and contradict popular images of Asian gender and sexuality.
In an attempt to dismantle the systems in which they are misplaced, they used the question, “who’s telling our stories?” to drive their work. Seen/Unseen hopes to acknowledge the voices that speak for us while also making space for our own.
