from memory held: a scream

  • University of Amsterdam | June 2023

  • Dear Guest,

You are invited as a body to pass through entangled memories of other bodies, who have not arrived, who are waiting, hiding, stuck, almost here, who are not here.

Here, in this case, is the lower level of a building that has historically been many things, including the home of a prosperous trader within the Dutch Indies Company and a hiding space for art stolen by the Nazis. You are here; and you are not alone.

It is important that you stay and move together and take care of each other. It may not be as fast, you may have to wait, but you will go further together. Together with the people in your group you form another body – no matter if you know them or not. Do not risk disappearance. Take care of each other. Content notes next to every room can help you to do so.

The fragments of crafted memories you are invited to cross, are fragments of many wholes, there are many ways to move and interact with them. Be assured that you can leave the memories at any time, stay as long as you need, or go back to them – but handle them with care, they are not yours.

from memory held: a scream was inspired by Caridad Svich’s Carthage/Cartagena, speaking to the themes of translation, forced migration, “home” and loss, through a collaborative roaming performance in UvA’s historical Universiteitstheater.
